Stabilizer FAQ's

Listed below are all the frequently asked questions for this section.

Answers

Q. What is SdSV adhesive water soluble film?

A. SdSV™ is an exclusive Hoop-It-All product developed and first sold in 1996. It was previously called Stick-dSOLV. It is a Clear water-soluble film with a water-soluble adhesive protected by a clear release liner. This stabilizer can be used in place of SIA(pressure-sensitive adhesive) stabilizer when embroidering on sheer or see-through materials. It completely washes out in 70degree tap water within a minute leaving no unsightly residue on the fabric. As of April 1999 SdSV Adhesive Backed Water Soluble Film has been improved for easier handling and has no stretch. It has a one year shelf life and is fantastic for use with the Creative Feet embellishing techniques. Use on back of stretch or sheer fabrics before sewing on beads or sequins and the fabric will not pucker. Why use this instead of tear-away stabilizers? Because tear-away stabilizers break the thread when removed from zigzag stitches that are sewn with a long length as with sewing on beads.... Every sewer should have a roll of this in their sewing room. SdSV Adhesive Backed Water-Soluble Film can be used also as a clear topping held by the adhesive on the top of the embroidery when working on high nap fabrics, such as terry cloth to aid in keeping the loops from showing through the embroidery. SdSV Adhesive Water Soluble Film is a great stabilizer whenever you want no unsightly stabilizer left on the fabric and can be used in lace- work, heirloom sewing, cut-work, and crafts. Our new SdSV Adhesive Backed Water Soluble Film is better than ever, easier to work with, and will not stretch. This is an exclusive product of Hoop-It-All, Inc. and as with all of our products, is made in the USA. This Water Soluble film is also available without the adhesive at a lower cost than other many brands of water soluble stabilizers under the brand name dSV. You have 2 choices on how to use the wonderful Sdsv water soluble adhesive-backed stabilizer for embroidery. * Stretch to cover the entire area of the hoop. * Apply SIA to hoop first then cover the SIA with the release liner. Cut away a section of SIA where you want to embroider and patch with Sdsv. This stabilizer is great for use whenever you do not want to see the stabilizer on the reverse side of your embroidery, such as towels. Both the stabilizer and the adhesive wash away in 70*F. water.

Q. What is FaBond?

A. FaBond is an iron-on tear-away stabilizer used for added stabilization of the fabric which allows you to determine how securely it holds the fabric. For a light-hold use a light temperature on your iron. For a firm-hold set your iron to a high temperature. This is a one-of-a-kind product that cools the sewing machine needle-greatly reducing if-not completely stopping "gumming of the needle" when using some other adhesive stabilizers. Iron FaBond to wrong-side of fabric using a piece larger than the embroidery design-not the entire width of the hoop's sewing field (unless you are embroidering the entire area of the hoop). Lay the fabric with FaBond side-down on to the SIA adhesive stabilizer and embroider. Your designs will not lose their shape and the fabric will have added support. Once you are ready to remove the fabric from the hoop-you will find that it is easy to remove the adhesive stabilizer from the fabric-because FaBond - not the fabric is actually stuck to the SIA. A must for Embroidery, Appliqué, Needle Punch, Monogramming and Charted Needlework. FaBond is also great for making your own Quilt Templates.

Q. What is Fuse 'n Stick?

A. Fuse 'n Stick is a CLEAR 2-sided (thin) Fusible adhesive-backed film. It is used mainly for making embroidered patches and machine appliqué. Press one side with a hot iron to the back of the fabric, peel off the release liner and then finger press the appliqué to the main fabric. It is now a reposition able appliqué, which can be machine stitched down, or use a hot iron again and it becomes permanent. FABOND can also be used in place of SIA when it is desirable to use a CLEAR backing.

Q. What is dry Cover-Up?

A. Dry Cover-Up is a vinyl plastic material available in 15 colors and clear for a total of 16 choices that is used as a permanent embroidery topping. It is fantastic for stopping the fabric color from showing through your embroidery. It lifts the embroidery up off the fabric, does not wash out and is not altered by dry cleaning. Example: (If you want to embroider white thread on a black fabric-the black fabric color can change the color from white to gray.) Cut a piece of white dry Cover-Up (spray adhesive on the center of one side (it is not required) of the dry Cover-Up and place it on the fabric where your design will be. (The piece of dry Cover-Up should be slightly larger than the area to embroider, so you have something to hold on to when tearing away excess). To remove excess dry Cover-Up pull toward embroidery at a 45 degree angle using your fingers or tweezers and it will tear-away easily. You may also apply heat from an iron to the embroidery edges to ease removal. You will love it!

Q. Can I use SIA Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Stabilizer on the hoop furnished with my machine?

A. Yes, you can use SIA Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Stabilizer with your regular hoop by sticking it on the bottom of the hoop or pressing it between the hoop rings and scoring the Release Liner with a sharp object, being careful not to cut the SIA stabilizer. However, the rings of your hoop are thick and force the fabric to lift up along the hoop's edge. Hoop-It-All hoops are flat-allowing any item to lie flat. This flat-textured surface makes it easier for the adhesive of the stabilizer to bond to the hoop yet is designed to easily be removed and prevent/reduce adhesive build-up. Your machine's standard hoop will gum-up from the adhesive and it is difficult to remove. Hoop-It-All's well-thought-out patented design ensures a tight-hold of the stabilizer which is critical to perfect-uniform embroidery. If you use the SIA on your factory original hoop, you will probably need to use an adhesive remover such as "Goo Gone" to remove the adhesive residue.
